Poster Tales: It was December of 1970, and I was in London, England. The music that I loved was undergoing some seismic changes. At the beginning of the year, the Beatles announced that they had broken up. The Beatles were the ones who introduced me to rock music in the first place and they were the trend setters of the underground. And, as if that wasn't bad enough, in September, Jimi Hendrix was found dead in his London flat. Jimi was one of my guitars heroes. I followed him religiously during his life and his album, Electric Ladyland occupied the top spot in my collection for months. These two groups that had helped shape my conscious and unconscious mind were now gone. It was the end of an era, and quite shocking at the time. But with the end of any one era, another era begins. And the new era that was dawning was one of cows, prisms, pigs and walls.
While in London, I did what I always did. I went in search of record stores and stores that sold posters (often one and the same). Two of the places that I visited were Carnaby Street, due to its reputation in the underground community, and Kings Road, which was the "new" Carnaby Street for fashion and underground items. Carnaby Street had dozens of shops selling pipes, incense, records and, yes, posters. They were everywhere. And Kings Road was just the same, with lots of underground shops. And, yes, I went down to the Chelsea Drugstore. If you have seen the movie A Clockwork Orange, that was the place where Alex visits the record store. It was like being in a maze of different shops. And everywhere there were posters.
I remember seeing lots of bright day-glow posters for sale. You couldn't miss them. There were Apple Records posters, Beatles posters, Hendrix posters, posters of the cow from Atom Heart Mother, lots of black light posters, numerous Hapshash posters, and all sorts of posters from the London underground. A plethora of riches!
Being a teenager at the time, I didn't have alot of money so I only bought a few posters. If only I could have bought them all. What an investment that would have made!
